    r. O. S :
The Light Horse is a meticulously researched, imaginatively conceived and finely-executed work of historical fiction based on the mission of British colonial soldier and administrator William Henry Sleeman (1788-1856) to eradicate the thriving gangs of homicidal thieves known as Thuggee (from whence we get the word thug) who had for centuries preyed upon hapless travelers on the Indian subcontinent up until the early 1800s. Sleeman’s relentless efforts culminated in the capture of Feringeea, the last great zamindar (prince) of the Thuggee and the effective end of the murderous cult. The Thuggee justified their deadly and lucrative enterprise on religious grounds, claiming to be offering their victims as sacrifices to the Hindu mother goddess Bhowanee (or Bhavani, the “giver of life”) with the possessions of the victims being the rewards for service to the goddess. From these historic facts, the author has woven the fascinating tale of the fictional Fandoor al Gupta, a boy of great artistic talent whose misfortune, abusive suffering and devotion to Bhowanee eventually lead him into the Thugee society and his own mission of revenge upon those who exploited and betrayed him. Brayton takes us into Fandoor’s life and mind through the use of first person narrative that alternates deftly with the larger picture presented from the external perspective of an objective observer of history. The Light Horse is available in written and audible versions. Australian actress Kylie Speer ably narrates the audible book using her voice skills to bring the many characters to life, accompanied by sound effects and music. The reader or listener who lacks intimate familiarity with the complexities of Hindu religion, Indian society and the history of the British conquest of the subcontinent should be prepared for a deep dive into all of these subjects and will come away with considerable knowledge and the desire to learn more. All in all, a compelling story well told.

    From Ebook reviews:
Like the reviewer above I will agree that this is a wonderful tale of Indian tribal and British military life in nineteenth century India. I was taken aback by amount of detail packed in here, and the graceful segues that occur throughout. I know Jon primarily as a rock ‘n’ roll songwriter and had no clue he was into this sort of thing. Powerful and very well written. Plus, I learned a TON of new words that I had to look up. GREAT read.
